A View-John Pershing

(This is one of His, being my Dad’s, poems…I hope you enjoy it)

Standing on a mountain crest

Looking at the miles that lay before,

The years of my day lay before

It was easy to name all points of interest,

Great satisfaction swept over me,

While looking at the roadway home,

Friends came to stand with me

To look at the vastness of the valley,

A small argument broke the silence

I can see farther than you can,

The next few minutes quickly passed,

I can see, I can see, and I can see,

All the areas were quickly named,

As if no one could name another point,

A small voice timidly sounded,

“I can see God,”

With Laughter everywhere

In mocking disbelief,

How became the question,

“Because I know the way,”

“Silence fell over the group

As they strained to see the way

That their friend knew
